TAG Engineering has an immediate opening for a Senior or Intermediate Mechanical Engineer with a building design specialization and experience working within a multi-disciplinary design team of architects and other engineers. This is a full-time indeterminate position based in Yellowknife, serving TAG’s projects across the NWT and the Central and Western Arctic regions.

Reporting to TAG Engineering’s lead mechanical engineer, the ideal candidate will be a skilled engineer capable and willing to engage in the full range of duties from drafting to project management. You will be supported by a team of experienced technologists and EIT’s with peer support from your department lead in our Yellowknife office and another experienced mechanical engineer in our Whitehorse office. Versatility and a willingness to jump on a task to help a colleague under pressure will be considered major assets.

TAG Engineering serves a very diverse client base with widely varying needs. As a project engineer you will interact directly with clients and will often be required to communicate the intent behind engineering decisions in non-technical language. One day this could mean participating in a value engineering workshop with a community government for the design of a cultural center. Another day, it could mean working with a community housing officer and an architect to group different construction tasks into a plan that will allow multiple homes in a remote community to be renovated simultaneously. Whatever the scenario, people skills, technical proficiency, and creativity will all be required.

TAG will cover the costs of relocating to Yellowknife.

Taylor Architecture Group (TAG) is a northern-based architecture firm with a focus on community design work, especially First Nation and Inuit communities, throughout the North. Our head office is located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, with satellite offices in Whitehorse and Ottawa.

In 2018, TAG expanded to include a mechanical and electrical engineering division with a focus on integrated design, coordination, energy efficiency and working for the best interests of our clients.

Duties:

Your work at TAG Engineering will be primarily project-based. Within any given project you may be required to undertake any or all of the following.
Contribute technical or operational information to competitive proposals organized by the business development lead or proposal specialist. This could include reviewing technical requirements in RFPs, recommending overall mechanical design approaches, identifying questions to submit to the RFP officer, estimating time commitments, and reviewing fees and schedules in proposals.
Attending startup meetings with clients and other members of a design team to review and approve project schedules and confirm specifics of your scope. Support the administrative staff to set up time tracking and invoicing and to prepare contracts for the client and sub-consultants.
Complete inspections and assessments of existing buildings to identify and/or confirm issues and conditions relating to mechanical systems that are being considered for modification or replacement. This may include running tests on operating equipment with support from a contractor or maintenance person. Assess project specific challenges or risks relating to the mechanical engineering component of any proposed renovation or expansion of a building including building code compliance issues. Provide detailed assessment reports using TAG Engineering’s established professional assessment report formats.
Prepare and present concept level mechanical design information such as high-level calculations of space heating loads, optimal placement of HVAC system components and related spatial requirements, NECB and other building code requirements relating to HVAC systems and fire suppression for the building type.
Prepare schematic level mechanical engineering designs in collaboration with other professional disciplines including the project architect, structural engineer, electrical engineer, civil engineer, energy modeler, acoustic engineer, and cost consultant. Draft, edit, and review mechanical designs using AutoCAD and/or Revit. Provide outline specifications for mechanical systems. Attend submission review meetings with clients to answer questions and explain the intent behind mechanical design decisions.
Using Autocad, Revit and other task-specific modeling software as needed, update and refine schematic designs incorporating feedback from the client and other disciplines on the design team. Prepare and present Design Development level drawings, specs, and narratives that demonstrate how all key functions of your design will work effectively and how it will interact with the building’s electrical and architectural systems to meet building code requirements, energy performance targets, and deliver a comfortable end user experience that will be within the client’s means to build and service.
Prepare detailed construction documents based on the developed design in close coordination with other discipline leads. Present these detailed documents to clients at progress milestones and answer questions. Contribute to value engineering discussions and offer solutions to any performance or cost related challenges that arise during detailed design. Support the design team and the client to complete the review process with local AHJs and prepare the mechanical design components of tender packages for different project delivery methods.
While a project is out for tender, support the client with responses to mechanical RFIs and contribute to the evaluation of bids as needed.
During construction, attend regular progress meetings with the client and general contractor to ensure compliance with mechanical design requirements and adherence to project schedule. Attend dedicated meetings with mechanical trades to ensure the intent of design is clearly understood. Work collaboratively with the Client, the GC, and sub-trades to solve problems as needed to ensure that projects remain on schedule. Maintain clear written logs of all project communications with the client and the contractor according to TAG Engineering’s established standards and procedures.
Visit construction sites to verify progress and ensure compliance with design intent and regulatory standards. Provide relevant reports and information for contractor payment certification.
Prepare as-built drawings based on red-line drawings provided by the contractor. Review and edit O&M manuals and support client staff with equipment training as needed. Verify equipment performance during warranty reviews and provide required reporting.
Outside of specific projects, the ideal candidate will contribute to the development of TAG Engineering, identifying process improvements, participating in and/or leading continuing education events, and building professional relationships with clients and consultants. Willingness to work with our business development team to identify new opportunities, build our operational capacity, and improve our competitive position in the market will be considered a strong asset.

Credentials and Skills:

At a minimum, the successful candidate will have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or an adjacent engineering discipline, at least four years of experience in mechanical engineering for building design, and registration as a P.Eng. with a recognized professional licensing body in Canada such as NAPEG, APEGA, or APEGBC.
Required software proficiencies are AutoCAD, Revit, MS Excel and MS Word. Proficiency with Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, and Bluebeam will be considered advantageous.
Strong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards including Canadian Mechanical Code, National Building Code of Canada, NFPA20 Fire Pumps, CAN/ULC S-524 Fire Alarms, etc. is required.
Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare and present accurate, professionally written reports and recommendations.
Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement for the position. Fluency in French or any of the NWT’s other official languages will be considered a strong asset.

Length of Contract:

Candidate will begin as soon as possible in 2025. This is a full time (37.5 hr/week), permanent position.

Moving Costs:

A moving expense stipend will be provided by TAG if relocation is required.

Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience. Full benefits package is available. Paid vacation is included, plus approximately two weeks over the winter holidays.
