Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation Men's Shelter

Dawson City, Yukon
Entering Construction 2022

Expressing Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in culture and creating a healing environment were the two main priorities for the design of the TH Men’s Shelter.

The patchwork wood cladding references traditional shelters that were layered with fur pelts, while embodying the materiality of the surrounding landscape. A privacy screen, which wraps around the exterior gathering area and fire pit, will be built out of stripped birch poles like those used traditionally in fishing traps and drying racks. The building's facades are intended to incorporate large metal cut-outs in the shapes of culturally-relevant natural imagery: these artworks will be designed and constructed by members of the First Nation.
