Behchokǫ̀ Cultural Centre & Community Presence Office
Behchokǫ̀, Northwest Territories
now under construction
The New Behchokǫ̀ Cultural Centre and Community Presence Office Building is designed around two elements: a large drum-shaped hall (accommodating 500+ people) and the Community Presence Office, which is wrapped around a circular meeting space. The building design centres on important Tłı̨chǫ cultural elements and is integrated intimately with the land, water and surrounding views. Tłı̨chǫ citizens can canoe right up to the facility in summer months.
TAG has worked with the local Contractor for pre-construction reviews from early on in the process, to ensure that the use of local labour can be maximized during construction.
This facility will display local art and history, and is intended to function as a primary gathering space for community members, for both formal and informal events and activities. The main lobby features movable display cases, wall graphics and digital displays, and will be curated in consultation with designated cultural curators in the community.
