Canol Trail Shelters

Various sites on the Canol Trail, Northwest Territories

Completed in 2020

These emergency shelters are being assembled in a several locations along the remote, rugged 350-km-long Canol Trail, which runs from Norman Wells to the Yukon border.

As there is no access to these sites by road, the shelters were designed to be packaged and flown in by helicopter, along with a small, efficient assembly crew. The structure consists of a light steel frame system and structural insulated panels (SIPs), with log wall infill that is either flown in, or harvested from the surrounding area, depending on the site.

The interiors are minimal, with sleeping bunks and a woodstove for heat.
