Career opportunity:
ELECTRICAL EIT or TECHNOLOGIST – Yellowknife or Whitehorse
TAG Engineering is seeking an Electrical EIT or Technologist to join our multidisciplinary team of architects and engineers— in our Whitehorse or Yellowknife office. The successful candidate will work under the Lead Electrical Engineer but must be comfortable in managing multiple tasks/projects independently, and be capable of design, drafting and written communication (reports, emails, etc.).
TAG will cover costs of relocating to our Whitehorse or Yellowknife office. Please indicate which office you would be interested/willing to work in, in your application.
About Us
The firm was founded in Yellowknife over 40 years ago. Since that time, we have been committed to developing our practice in Canada’s arctic/sub-arctic context, to serve northern—primarily First Nation and Inuit—communities. The firm has grown to include three offices (Yellowknife as the head office, with satellite offices in Whitehorse and Ottawa) with design teams led by licensed architects and engineers, as well as specialist research. In 2018 we also added TAG Engineering to the TAG group of companies to enable us to deliver integrated Architectural, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering design services for our clients.
Our approach is iterative, integrated, and process driven. Every project (which includes mid- to large-scale civil, educational, institutional and residential facilities, as well as smaller-scale commercial and residential projects) is different, with unique challenges and opportunities. Using our experience, we develop approaches that address both the challenging climate as well as the unique culture and context and construction challenges (logistics of shipping materials, working in the cold, etc.). We design to high energy efficiency standards and work closely with communities to develop buildings that work best for their needs. We understand that each project – whether it’s a cultural centre, an industrial garage, or anything in between – is extremely important to the host community. We aim to deliver deep and lasting value with every project we undertake.
TAG’s projects are located predominantly in remote communities across the three territories. Our team members are invited into unique travel opportunities, often taking small aircraft to the breathtaking high arctic. By nature of TAG’s history and context, our workplace is a welcoming, social, and dynamic team environment. If you are looking for an opportunity to apply your creative assets, while living the adventure of Canada’s Far North, send your application to careers@tagyk.com.
Yellowknife Location:
Yellowknife is a vibrant Northern city offering a one-of-a-kind lifestyle experience. As the Aurora Capital of the World, our small community has long been an international tourist destination offering unparalleled viewing experiences of the Northern Lights. Though the city itself is a dense and distinctly urban center, we are bordered on all sides by wide open wilderness. Many Yellowknifers spend their weekends visiting off-grid cabins – accessed by cross-country ski trails or snowmobile in the winter, kayak and canoe in the summer. Evenings are spent “aurora hunting” at bonfires, cook-outs, or ski trails over the frozen Great Slave Lake. In summer, the Midnight Sun creates surreal conditions for a nighttime paddle between the eclectic houseboats in Yellowknife Bay.
For the adventurous professional, this town is an exciting place to work and play, offering unexpected fascinations. The community is open, welcoming, young, and diverse. Our thriving arts and design scene includes an annual summer music festival (Folk on the Rocks), a month-long winter festival (Snowking), two annual film festivals and a wide array of cultural events that fill almost every weekend of the year.
Whitehorse Location:
Whitehorse is a small (though slightly larger than Yellowknife) but beautiful city, located adjacent to mountains, the Yukon River, and just a short drive from Alaska. For history buffs, the Yukon has a number of nearby cities from the gold rush era; if you love the outdoors there are tons of great camping, canoeing/paddling, road tripping and hiking areas to explore; and if you just want a great place to raise a family/live your life, there are lots of groups to join, city activities to take part in and, as reported by Guinness World Records, it’s the city with the least air pollution in the world!
Whitehorse is also a little more temperate than Yellowknife, so typically is on the warmer side (though still bring your parka/good winter coat!), but still has great opportunities to see the northern lights and take part in winter activities. Air Canada, WestJet and Air North – a Yukon airline – also has regular flights to Vancouver as well as flights to Ottawa and Toronto in the summer, with some good deals popping up every so often (so don’t worry about feeling “trapped” in the north!)
