Mechanical Technologist

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Taylor Architecture Group (TAG) is a Northern-based architecture and engineering firm with a focus on community design work, primarily for First Nation and Inuit communities throughout Northern Canada. Our head office is located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, with satellite offices in Whitehorse and Ottawa. Projects include mid- to large-scale civic, educational, institutional, and residential facilities, as well as smaller-scale commercial projects.

 

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Technologist to join our multidisciplinary engineering and design team in our Yellowknife office. The successful candidate will have strong technical drafting and coordination capabilities, experience or interest in building mechanical systems design, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced consulting environment.

 

The successful candidate will work under the direction of TAG’s Lead Mechanical Engineer while supporting a variety of projects across Northern Canada. Responsibilities will include assisting with mechanical drafting, HVAC and plumbing system layouts, technical coordination, reporting, construction documentation, and project support throughout all phases of design and construction.

 

TAG’s projects are located predominantly in remote communities across the three territories. Team members are often involved in unique and rewarding projects that support Northern infrastructure, housing, education, recreation, and community development. The successful candidate may have opportunities to travel to project sites and communities throughout the North as part of the design and construction process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with TAG Engineering staff across the Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Ottawa offices.

  • Assist with the preparation and revision of mechanical construction drawings using AutoCAD and Revit.

  • Support the development of HVAC, plumbing, ventilation, hydronic heating, and mechanical system layouts for a variety of building types.

  • Assist with preparation of mechanical construction documentation, reports, schedules, technical deliverables, and specifications.

  • Coordinate with project managers, architects, interior designers, structural engineers, civil engineers, electrical engineers, contractors, and external consultants throughout all project phases.

  • Support multidisciplinary coordination between architectural, structural, civil, electrical, and mechanical systems.

  • Manage workload effectively to support multiple projects and overlapping deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Participate in site visits, field reviews, and existing condition assessments to document site conditions and collect information for design purposes.

  • Support construction administration activities and assist with contractor requests for information (RFIs), shop drawing reviews, and submittal coordination.

  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams while also being capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

  • Participate in occasional travel to remote Arctic and sub-Arctic communities. Candidates should be comfortable travelling on small aircraft and working in remote environments.

  • Utilize AutoCAD and Revit for drafting and design work. Candidates with limited Revit experience should be willing to develop proficiency through company-supported training and project work.

 

About You:

  • Diploma or certificate in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Technician program, Building Systems Technology, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum two (2) years of related experience in mechanical drafting, building systems design support, or consulting environments is considered an asset.

  • Experience working in an architectural or engineering consulting office is considered an asset.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD is required.

  • Experience with Revit is considered a strong asset.

  • Understanding of HVAC, plumbing, ventilation, and hydronic heating systems is considered an asset.

  • Familiarity with applicable building codes and standards, including the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and applicable mechanical and plumbing codes.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare professional reports, correspondence, and technical documentation.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Ability to manage deadlines, prioritize tasks, and coordinate effectively across multiple projects.

  • Experience working in consulting, construction, or building systems environments is considered an asset.

  • Experience working in Northern, rural, remote, or Indigenous community environments is considered an asset.

  • Eligibility to work in Canada is required.

  • Valid Canadian driver’s license is considered an asset.

 

Length of Employment:

This is a full time (37.5 hr/week), permanent position.
